Helio P60 Vs Snapdragon 636

Snapdragon 636 integrates Kryo 260 CPU which are based on the ARM’s Cortex-A73 CPU Architecture. Helio P60 integrates raw ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores with higher clocks. Both are the hottest chips for mid-range and upper mid-range segment smartphones. Know the key differences, Read the comparison below…

Recently, the Redmi Note 5 Pro equipped with the Snapdragon 636 have been released. Also, Xiaomi’s rival RealMe (sub-brand of OPPO) launched the RealMe 1 equipped with the MediaTek Helio P60. In this post, we are discussing the performance prospects by pitting the Helio P60 Vs Snapdragon 636 mobile processor (chipset). This post is going to be a quick and easy read by understanding the key differences in 3 points.

1. Helio P60 Has Powerful CPU & Overall Design Process

MediaTek’s Helio P60 SoC (system-on-a-chip) is built on 12nm TSMC FinFET technology, whereas the Snapdragon 636 is fabricated on 14nm LPP technology. The process node technology gives the Helio P60 (P60) an edge in being more energy efficient.

The Snapdragon 636 consists of four 1.8 GHz Kryo 260 big cores and four 1.6G Hz Kryo 260 small cores, which are based on ARM’s Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 cores respectively. On the other, the P60 integrates raw ARM Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 clocked at 2.0 GHz. This design implementation caused the P60 to score more points in the Geekbench 4.1 benchmark tests as seen in the chart.

2. Snapdragon 636 Has Better GPU & Cellular LTE Modem

The Snapdragon 636 SoC is a lite version of the Snapdragon 660 boasting same Kryo 260 CPUs and LTE modem. However, the GPU is downgraded to Adreno 509 from the Adreno 512. In view of the GPU, the Adreno 509 is more powerful to handle 3D applications and games than the Mali-G72-MP3 GPU integrated on the P60 SoC.

3. Helio P60 Integrates An AI Accelerator (NPU)

MediaTek’s Helio P60 is the first mid-range SoC to sport a dedicated AI processing unit (mobile APU) which enables applications such as facial recognition, object identification, computational photography, among other things.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 636 also supports Neural Processing Engine (NPE) SDK with the help of the Hexagon DSP. The SDK works with some of the most popular AI frameworks such as Caffe/Caffe2, including Google’s TensorFlow. However, Helio P60’s on-chip NPU is more powerful which enables multiple AI applications.

Helio P60 Vs Snapdragon 636 Key Takeaways

  • MediaTek Helio P60 is quite ahead of the Snapdragon 636 excluding the GPU part
  • Although the Snapdragon 636 uses the Kryo 260 CPU architecture (casting half of the cached Cortex-A73), due to cache level reduction and clock frequency reduction. hence, naturally not as good as P60’s complete Cortex-A73 CPU architecture

In terms of processor performance, the Snapdragon 636 is about 15% lower than the Helio P60, but the gap is not too big. In general, the Helio P60 is stronger, adopting the new 12nm process. The dual-core NPU (AI accelerator) enables AI/Machine Learnng features. Overall, MediaTek’s Helio P60 is more advanced than the Snapdragon 636 and it is worth buying for excellent imaging and powerful performance.
