With the gradual end of 2018, how well the major manufacturers are performing in the mobile phone market, we can look at the data published by the research institutions. Want to know which one is the most used smartphone in the world? The answer is the iPhone 6s!

ScientiaMobile recently announced that 7.53% of the world’s smartphone usage is from Apple’s iPhone 6s. This ratio is bigger than how a smartphone is. It can be said that at present, the iPhone 6s is the most popular.

The iPhone 6s is so popular, this is not a very strange thing. As a model launched in 2015, it is already showing signs of fatigue on the iPhone 6 today, and it still has a relatively good experience in the era of iOS 11. When it was learned that the iPhone 7 did not bring design updates, many iPhone 6s users chose to continue using the device at hand until now, which is also human nature.

Apple A9 Chipgate

The iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus they all carry Apple’s new A9 processor, but they are different.

As we all know, in response to the huge demand in the early stage of the sale, Apple gave orders to Samsung and TSMC respectively for the next-generation A9 processor orders for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Among them, the former uses a theoretically more advanced and energy-efficient 14nm process technology, while the latter is a 16nm FinFET process. Based on this, the A9 processor manufactured by Samsung is 10% smaller than the TSMC foundry. The area of the two is 96 square millimeters and 104.5 square millimeters respectively, and the part numbers are APL0898 and APL1022.

Process technology is a chip fabrication or lithography technique which enables high performance and low energy consumption chip. The nanometers (nm) size is a vital parameters among the billions of transistors etched on the Silicon. Lower ‘nm’ value implies more advanced and beneficial chip or processor.

In a nutshell, the APL0898 is a part number for A9 Processor which is more energy efficient as it is fabricated on the Samsung’s 14nm process.

Some iPhones got the Samsung-built variant, some got TSMC-built variant. This whole turmoil is named as “Chipgate”. Similar to the VW’s dieselgate wherein the giant automaker tweaked emission monitoring software.

The Chipgate is a significant one, as it affected the battery performance of the TSMC’s chip iPhones 6S.
