Kirin 710 Vs Snapdragon 660 In 3 Points | Infographics Benchmark

The recent release of the Huawei’s Nova3i equipped with the Kirin 710 system-on-chip (SoC) has attracted huge attention. The most powerful mobile chip manufacturer in China has a huge expectation on the HiSilicon Kirin 710 processor. Kirin 710 is targetted at the Snapdragon 710 which got outrun by the dragon due to a slight difference. In this post, we compare the difference between the Kirin 710 Vs Snapdragon 660 to see if Huawei’s new mobile processor can beat the dragon 660.

The Snapdragon 660 is the mid-range processor released by Qualcomm last year which integrates sub-premium features such as Kryo CPUs, Adreno 5XX Series GPU, faster LTE, among others. This year, it re-launched the Snapdragon 660 AIE which mainly adds AI support.

Further, Snapdragon 660 can be seen as a lite version of this year’s Snapdragon 710. Let’s take a look at the difference between the parameters of Kirin 710 and Snapdragon 660, as shown in the following chart. From the comparison of CPU parameters, the specifications of Kirin 710 and Snapdragon 660 are relatively close, mainly due to some differences in details.

Kirin 710 Has Better Design

The Kirin 710 uses a more advanced 12nm process, while the Snapdragon 660 uses a 14nm process. The former takes the advantage of the lower power consumption. The CPU specifications of K710 and SD660 are very similar. The big cores are all four Cortex-A73 CPU cores, and the main frequency is 2.2 GHz. The only difference is the small frequency of the small core. The four A53 small cores of the Kirin 710 are 1.7 GHz, and the four A53 small cores of the Xiaolong 660 are 1.8Gz, which is 0.1 GHz higher than the former. Considering that the CPU generally looks at the big core, the small core frequency is very small, the CPU The performance is basically the same.

Snapdragon 660 Has Better GPU

The Kirin 710 integrates the Mali-G51 graphics core, while the Snapdragon 660 integrates the Adreno 512 graphics core. It is difficult to judge which is more powerful by the name, but we can introduce the MediaTek Helio P60 as a comparison, and we can also draw conclusions.

The Kirin 710 is equipped with the Mali-G51, which is the same GPU as the Mail-G72 equipped with the MediaTek Helio P60. From the specification point of view, Mali-G51 is not as good as Mail-G72, and from the previous article “Snapdragon 636 Vs Helio P60“, the Snapdragon 636 still has an advantage on the GPU.

Therefore, SD660 being more powerful than the SD636 at the GPU hardware level, the Snapdragon 660 will be significantly stronger than the Kirin 710. However, although the Kirin 710 has an insufficient hardware, it supports the ” GPU Turbo ” game acceleration technology natively and has optimization advantages in software, so each has its own merits.

Both Chips Can Run Neural Network based-Apps

OEMs and developers can also provide an immersive and engaging user experience with machine learning on the Snapdragon 660 and 630 mobile platforms using the Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine development kit. This heterogeneous software framework offers support for Caffe / Caffe2 and TensorFlow, making it like a human brain, able to identify and match which core is being used – CPU, GPU, or DSP / HVX – to run certain commands.

Both chips do not have on-chip dedicated NPU like the Kirin 970, however, using the vector DSP, GPU, and other co-processors, the chip can handle mediocre AI applications.

The difference between Kirin 710 and SD660 is mainly the above 3 points rest specifications such as RAM interface support, baseband, fast charge support, etc. are basically the same.

Kirin 710 Vs Snapdragon 660 Summary

Compared with the Snapdragon 660, the Kirin 710 has mainly low power consumption, stock ARM CPUs, and a slightly weaker GPU but the GPU Turbo software optimization can make up for the deficiencies in the GPU hardware. On the whole, Kirin 710 is mainly used to replace its own Kirin 659. It cannot beat the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 710.

There are not much difference between them, however, Snapdragon 660 has a powerful GPU rest all the performance is almost similar. Also, to counter-attach the GPU Turbo technology, Qualcomm is soon launching the “Adreno Turbo“.

This whole scenario between the two technology giant is getting interesting this year, let us know about what do you think about the above comparison analysis.
