From the comparison of SoC specifications, it’s quite tough for Samsung Exynos 7872 to challenge the features of Qualcomm Snapdragon 660. After all, the former is only a mid-range chip, while the latter is an “upper mid-range” chip. Both chips are built on the same 14nm process node, which is excellent in power consumption control. In terms of CPU, GPU, Memory, Flash support, Cellular, etc., Snapdragon 660 easily beats the Exynos.

1. Snapdragon 660 Integrates Better CPUs

Samsung do designs its own CPUs but only for premium chips such as the Exynos 8895, Exynos 9810. In Exynos 7872, Samsung has integrated the 4 Cortex-A73 CPUs and 2 Cortex-A53 CPUs for performance and energy efficiency. On the other hand, Qualcomm integrates 8 Kryo 260 CPUs clocked at 2.2 GHz (maximum). The Kryo 260 is a combination of 4 semi-custom Cortex-A73 cores (performance cluster) and 4 semi-custom Cortex-A53 cores (efficiency cluster) in a big.LITTLE arrangement.

2. Adreno 512 GPU In The Snapdragon 660 Is More Powerful

For gaming needs, the graphics processing unit (GPU) is the key. The Samsung Exynos 7872 uses ARM’s Mali-G71 MP1 GPU. Mali G71 series GPUs are not bad, but the Mali-G71 MP1 variant comprises of a single core (ALU). Kirin 960, the high-end processor from Huawei also has a built-in Mali-G71 graphics core but the Mali-G71 MP8 variant (8 core/ALUs).

Simply put, the performance of the Mali-G71 MP1 GPU is not strong, and the single-core high-frequency is prone to fever (heat problem) and frequency throttling (affects games) caused by excessive power consumption. Adreno 512 integrates more ALUs and have more GFLOPs performance.

3. Snapdragon 660 Houses Powerful Media Processors

The inbuilt Spectra ISP supports higher resolution camera sensors. The Hexagon DSP combined with the CPU, GPU enables more power to AI applications. On the other hand, the ISP in the Exynos 7872 can support resolution up to 21 MP image sensors.
